THE BAPTISM OF OUR LORD

It has long been a question why the sinless Jesus stepped into the water to receive baptism by his cousin John. What happened with Jesus’ baptism happens with every baptism: identity is established, new realities are created. Luke tells us, “When the time came for the baby to be circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name which the angel had given him before he had been conceived.” God named His son, “Yeshua” (Jesus), a name with means “Yahweh is salvation/has saved.” God provided us with an identity for His Son and like any parent, it changed God’s identity. Instead of a distant and impersonal God, through Jesus He becomes for us “Abba” – Father. God becomes personal for us.
