80th Anniversary of Soviet invasion of Poland – 17 September 1939

The Soviet invasion of Poland was a Soviet military operation that started without a formal declaration of war on 17 September 1939. The Soviet NKVD sent hundreds of thousands of people from eastern Poland to Siberia and other remote parts of the Soviet Union. On the Polish side, over 7,000 soldiers died fighting the Red Army, with 250,000 taken prisoners and around 10,000 wounded.C

ARCHANGELS

September 29th is the Feast of the Archangels. The three Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael are the only angels named in Sacred Scripture. St. Michael is invoked for protection against Satan and all evil. St. Gabriel announced the birth of John the Baptist to his father Zacharias, and the Incarnation of the Word in the womb of Mary. St. Raphael, whose name means “God has healed” is mentioned in the Book of Tobit because of his healing of Tobias’ blindness.

ST. STANISLAUS KOSTKA

St. Stanisław Kostka S.J. (October 28, 1550 – August 15, 1568) was a Polish novice of the Society of Jesus. He was born at Rostkowo, Poland, on 28 October 1550, and died at Rome on August 15, 1568. His feast day is celebrated on November 13th (September 18th in Poland).
