ash-wednesday_t1In the present Church calendar, Ash Wednesday is the first day of the observance of the forty days of Lent. It takes its name from the solemn ceremony of the liturgy of the day wherein the ashes of palms or other suitable substances are blessed and then marked on the foreheads of the faithful in the form of a cross with the accompanying words, “Remember, man, you are dust and to dust you shall return.” Or: “Repent, and believe the Gospel.”

POPE APPOINTS NEW LEADER FOR PORTLAND ARCHDIOCESE

Installation will take place on April 2nd Pope Benedict XVI has named Bishop Alexander K. Sample of Marquette, MI to shepherd the archdiocese of Portland, OR. The 52-year-old archbishop-designate will succeed Archbishop John G. Vlazny, who submitted his resignation last year when he reached the canonical age limit of 75. Archbishop –designate Sample has been Bishop of Marquette since 2006. He was 45 at the time of his ordination and was the youngest U.S. bishop at the time. The archdiocese of Portland is the second oldest in the U.S. after Baltimore.
